Your Metrics Aren’t Telling You Enough

Your Metrics Aren’t Telling You Enough

Your safety metrics may not show the whole picture. Book a 60-minute Safety Measurement Check-Up and get a clear list of what to change.

You have seen the gap between a green dashboard and your real operation. Now it is time to act.

It is 2am again. The question is different now.

First, we asked: what if we are measuring the wrong thing? Then we gave you the SIGHT checklist to test it. Then we showed how a good SPI can fall behind your operation.

If you read this series, you already know your metrics do not tell you enough. The question now is harder. What do I do about it, and how soon?

Waiting is now a decision

Before, you could say that you did not see the gap. Now you have seen it. That changes your position. If something goes wrong next month, “we planned to review it” is a weak answer.

This is not about fear. It is about thinking in advance about what you would have to explain.

After an occurrence, an investigation looks at your records. It asks what you knew and when you knew it. The authority asks for your SMS data and your management review minutes. Findings come with deadlines. Your Accountable Manager asks why the dashboard gave no warning. Customers and contractors ask their own questions.

Each of these questions leads to one: “What were your indicators telling you before this happened?”

The honest answer is: “They were green.”

Nobody will ask if the dashboard was green. They will ask if it looked in the right place.

The cost does not end when the investigation closes. It falls in three places.

  • Your organisation. The authority can look more closely at your approvals. Customers can look more closely at you. One event can outweigh years of good safety performance.
  • Your profession. Your name is on the safety policy and the management review. People will ask what you did with the information you had.
  • You, personally. You must live with the knowledge that you saw the gap and meant to act.

A review now takes a few hours. Explaining a missed review later costs much more.

Why this is hard to fix from the inside

Most safety teams can feel that something is wrong. Fewer can say what. This is normal when you are close to your own system.

The people who review the SPIs often wrote them. They know the history of each one. This knowledge helps. But it also makes it easy to explain an indicator away instead of testing it. Each review ends the same way: “It is still relevant. We will keep watching it.”

Then add the daily work. Audits to prepare. Findings to close. A team that is already busy. The SPI review moves to next quarter. Then it moves to the quarter after that.

The risk does not wait for your calendar.

What an outside view changes

An outside view does not replace your knowledge of your operation. It asks the questions that your team no longer asks, because the team expects the answers.

The Safety Measurement Check-Up

The Safety Measurement Check-Up is a 60-minute online session. You bring your own safety indicators and your dashboard. We test them against the five SIGHT questions, using your real evidence.

We look at what has changed in your operation: fleet, contractors, staffing, rules and the way people do the work. Then we look at what your indicators can see and what they cannot see.

You leave the session with a clear list:

  • what to keep
  • what to change
  • what to remove
  • what to add

“Will this work for an operation like ours?”

This is a fair question. A small CAMO, a large MRO, an airline and a rail operator each have different risks and different ways of reporting. So we do not start from a template. We start from your operation and your data.

We have worked with airlines, airports, civil aviation authorities, CAMOs, MROs and business aviation operators in Europe, the Middle East and other markets. We train auditors and compliance monitors. We have helped organisations write and rewrite their safety documents. We know what regulators look for. We also know how an SPI can look fine on paper and still miss what happens on the front line.

You did not ignore the discomfort

Many managers feel the 2am doubt and push it away. The dashboard is green. The last audit went well. So why worry? You did not do that. You asked the hard questions and tested your own SPIs.

That tells us you want measurement that shows the truth, even when the truth is uncomfortable. Good safety leadership starts there.

Let us take the next step together.
